Mentally Preparing for an Ostomy
Written by: Amanda Phillips
I've always been worried that one day I would need an ostomy. I'm not going to lie, the first one I saw was on Instagram, and I thought it was so gross. How could I ever have one? What if I looked down and was too grossed out to change it? It scared me.
Then I just kept following more and more accounts that posted more and more ostomy pictures, and I got used to it! So, with Ostomy Awareness Day in mind, I wanted to go ahead and share some of the ways you, too, can mentally prepare for getting an ostomy.
1. Seek Information:
Learn what it is to have an ostomy. Don't leave the surprises for after you have one. Ask healthcare professionals, nurses who deal in ostomy patients, and support groups about the procedure, care involved, and changes in lifestyle. Follow social media of people that have them and are promoting them as lifesavers. Thank you to all of you that have shared pictures and stories!!
2. Emotional Support:
Seek out friends, family, or support groups that deal specifically with ostomy care. The sharing of your feelings and concerns with others who have gone through this same experience will give you emotional support and valuable insights.
3. Speak with a Therapist:
See a therapist or counselor specializing in adjustments to chronic illness or ostomy. They can help you deal with the anxiety you are experiencing.
4. Plan and Prepare:
Stock up your home with the essentials such as ostomy pouches, ostomy belts, and skin care products. In this way, everything would be readily available, reducing unnecessary tensions.
5. Set Realistic Expectations:
Living with an ostomy is something that really takes time to get used to, and many doubts or queries will constantly be bothering you. First, be kind to yourself; then remember that thousands of people with ostomies lead active and full lives.
You're not alone and there are ways to mentally prepare. Everyone I know with an ostomy is so thankful to have one.
(Remember, look at the pictures! It helped me so much!)
