Halloween with Chronic Illness: Low-Energy Costume Ideas and Activities

Halloween can be so much fun, but often, if you live with a chronic illness or cancer, it just might feel overwhelming. The costumes, parties, and all of those trick-or-treaters can be fatiguing activities when your body already seems to work overtime just to try and make it through the day. That surely does not mean you need to skip Halloween. With just a little creativity, you can still get into the spooky spirit while staying comfortable and conserving energy.

We will review some low-energy costume ideas and some basic Halloween activities that allow one to get in on the fun without overexerting energy. Halloween is, after all, fun, and there is a way to celebrate it without sapping energy.

Low-Energy Costume Ideas

When you are dealing with a chronic illness, the thought of putting together a big ol' costume can be utterly exhausting. Luckily, there are some low-energy costume ideas out there that require basically zero effort, yet you can participate in all the fun.

1. Pajama Party

Of course, one of the easiest costume ideas is simply to wear your coziest pajamas and go as a "sleepy character." Whether you're Sleepy from the Seven Dwarfs or just claim you're the average person who's ready for bed, pajamas are comfortable and warm, which is great for a case of fatigue or chills. Add on a sleeping mask and/or some slippers, and you've got yourself a very simple, cozy costume.

2. Work Medical Devices or Comfort Items into Your Costumes

If one uses any medical devices or comfort items-you know, something like a port or an infusion pump-then one can work those into one's costume. Say, wear BeWell's IV Zip Hoodie or Injection Joggers and become a superhero! These items add ease to medical ports or injection sites with comfort and festivity.

3. Blanket Ghost

Another super-easy costume is the classic blanket ghost. Just take a light-colored sheet or blanket, cut out some eye holes, and voilà! If you have to be warm, use one of BeWell's soft blankets, such as the Infusion Day Blanket, and be the warmest ghost out there.

4. "Tired Mom/Dad" Costume

Throw on some sweats, a robe, and slippers, and voilà—your "tired mom/dad" costume is complete. Add in a coffee cup and maybe even some under-eye makeup to give yourself those "I need sleep" bags, and you're good to go. It's a funny, relatable costume that just so happens to be extremely low-effort and comfortable.

5. Onesie Animal Costume

There are tons out there, doubling as ultra-comfy pajamas: from unicorn to panda to dinosaur—every one of these one-piece costumes will be soft, easily worn, and just perfect for lounging or trick-or-treating. You get to stay warm, comfy, and festive without complicated assembly.

6. "Social Media Influencer"

But honestly, with a pair of leggings, an oversized sweatshirt, and shades, you're good to go; top it off with a phone or selfie stick as a prop, and voilà—you’re ready to go. Accomplish the look with pretty much no hassle whatsoever. Easy, comfy, and something you can evidently piece together with items you probably already have in your closet.

7. Dress up as a "Cozy Witch"

Take the classic witch costume but make it comfortable. Ditch the long black dress and stilettos in favor of a warm black sweater, black leggings, and slippers. Add in a witch's hat and plastic broomstick, and you're ready to go—literally, since you can do all of your spooking from the comfort of your favorite armchair.

Alternative Ways to Celebrate

Not into dressing up, or not up to going out? There are many ways you can enjoy Halloween from the comfort of your home. Here are some of the low-energy activities you can enjoy:

1. Arrange a Low-Key Movie Night

Sometimes the best thing you can do on Halloween is have a really quiet night in with blankets and tea and watch some Halloween movies. Whether you like really scary films, such as Hocus Pocus, or light-hearted and humorous movies, having a Halloween movie night is a good way to enjoy yourself without over-tiring.

2. Decorate a Pumpkin (No Carving Required)

Ditch the bother of carving and focus on decorating a pumpkin instead! Your pumpkin can be decorated with markers, stickers, or paints—all very effortlessly. The alternative could also be some light crafting, such as making Halloween cards or decorations. It's fun, creative, and easy on the body.

Tips to Save Energy

Halloween can be really fantastic but may require pacing and setting of boundaries to avoid overexertion. Below are some tips that can help a person manage his or her energy during the festivity period:

  • Pacing Halloween Events: If one intends to attend a Halloween party or trick-or-treat, have a way in which you can rest throughout the event.
  • Delegate: If planning a party or trick-or-treating with the family, ask others for help with the heavy lifting, decorating, or handing out candy.
  • Set Boundaries: Don’t feel pressured to do everything. Pick a few low-energy activities and skip the ones that may wear you out.
