Our story

It started in a hospital bed.

In February 2022, our founder Amanda was in the hospital with Crohn's disease, on a restrictive diet, and cold. The nurses were stretched thin, so she didn't ask for another blanket. She started designing the store she wished existed instead.

How BeWell started

Video transcript · Amanda Phillips, founder

Hi, I'm Amanda, the founder of BeWell, and I want to tell you a little bit about how BeWell was started.

I was in the hospital in February 2022 for my most recent hospitalization, and I was being put on a restrictive diet. While in the hospital, I was also very cold. There was a nurse shortage, and I felt really bad asking the nurses for more blankets. So I started thinking about how a Crohn's store doesn't exist.

While in the hospital, I designed my own IBD Journal, because I needed a way to not only track my symptoms, but I also wanted a place to list good foods and bad foods for me on my restricted diet. So the IBD Journal from BeWell was born.

Also in the hospital, I had the idea that it would be great to have an IV zip hoodie, where it could open in the front and open on the sleeves, with easy access to my arms, so that IVs could stay in and I could also be a little warmer than I was.

After having the idea for these products, I was thinking to myself, what other products would make a Crohn's store? I wasn't aware of anything like that existing. And how nice it would have been to have the products I had just created 20 years ago, when I was first diagnosed, and the stress that probably would have relieved.

I left the hospital without a name for this idea. But after working on designing the products and getting them manufactured, I was thinking about the name, and it came to me. Whenever I see my GI doctor, instead of saying goodbye when I leave, he says, "Be well." That's where the name came from, in honor of my doctor, who has been taking care of me for so many years.

His message is also motivational. When I see it on my products, I think everyone should be well, and we should have lives that are easier by having these products that help us with IBD.

Chapter one

Diagnosed at 17.

Senior year of high schoolHershey Medical Center

Amanda grew up with constant stomach pain. During her senior year of high school, she was taken to the ER and spent a week at Hershey Medical Center, then went home undiagnosed.

A follow-up colonoscopy confirmed Crohn's disease.

In the 20 years since, she's been through more hospital stays, more than five colonoscopies, and long stretches of remission.

"It started when I was 17. Twenty years later, I'm still trying to figure out what works for me."

Amanda on life with Crohn's

Video transcript · Amanda Phillips, founder

Hi, I'm Amanda, the founder of BeWell, and I wanted to take the time to tell you a little bit about my Crohn's story.

I grew up with constant stomachaches and pain my whole life, until I was finally taken to the ER when I was 17, during my senior year. That's when I was taken to Hershey Medical Center. I was there for a week, part of it in the ICU, while they tried to figure out what was wrong with me.

After that hospital stay, I had an endoscopy and a colonoscopy, where they said it looked like Crohn's disease.

After that, I took my medication and watched my diet, and it was probably over five years until my next hospitalization. That was after a very stressful event in my life, along with probably being on a smaller amount of medication than what was prescribed, because I felt okay.

After that week in the hospital, I probably had another five years or so when I wasn't hospitalized. I wasn't having symptoms. I was really in remission, until my most recent hospitalization in February this year. This was my shortest stay. It was less than a week.

I've always been sent into the hospital with nausea, vomiting, pain in my stomach, and changes in bowel habits. Those are the symptoms I have to look out for, so I know when something's wrong.

After this most recent hospitalization, I have been symptom-free again for almost a year, and this time I'm not planning to lessen my medication.

So that is my current story. It started when I was 17. Twenty years later, through hospitalizations and over five colonoscopies, I'm still trying to figure out what works for me. Thank you for watching my story.

Chapter two

The store that didn't exist.

February 2022A recent hospital stay

In February 2022, during a hospitalization, Amanda was put on a restrictive diet. She was also very cold.

"There was a nurse shortage, and I felt really bad asking the nurses for more blankets. So I started thinking about how a Crohn's store doesn't exist."

Amanda,Founder

So she started designing one from her hospital bed.

First

The IV Zip Hoodie

A hoodie that opens in the front and along the sleeves, so an IV can stay in and you can stay warm. It's still our most-loved product.

Then

The BeWell IBD Journal

A place to track symptoms and keep a list of good and bad foods on a restrictive diet.

She kept asking what else that store should have, and how much stress these products would have saved her 20 years earlier, when she was first diagnosed.

Chapter three

Named for what her doctor says instead of goodbye.

Amanda left the hospital with the product ideas but no name. Then it came to her. Her GI doctor, who has cared for her for years, never says goodbye at the end of an appointment. He says "be well."

The name honors him, and it's what she wants for everyone who wears it. It's a reminder in itself.

That's why BeWell is on every hoodie we make.

"When I see it on my products, I think everyone should be well."

Chapter four

Part of the idea from day one.

From the beginning, Amanda knew the people who needed BeWell most were sometimes the ones least able to afford it.

That's why the Donation Program exists. Someone buys a hoodie for a person in treatment, and we match it to a real person on our verified waitlist.

How we design: the Infusion Room Test

Could you wear it for four hours, stay warm, give your nurse easy access, and walk out without changing?

If yes, it ships.Every product we make has to pass.

  • You stay dressed

Patent-protected openings at the arms, chest, abdomen, and thighs reach IVs, ports, PICC lines, feeding tubes, and injection sites.

  • No one can tell

Every zipper is color-matched to the fabric. From across the room, it's just a hoodie.

  • Warm enough for cold rooms

Fabrics range from lightweight bamboo to plush sherpa, for every treatment room and season.

  • Gentle on your skin

Soft fabric comes first, and our zippers are lined, so metal doesn't touch your skin.

In their words

Nurses notice.
